ARES International Training Scholarships 2026–2027: Fully Funded Opportunities in Belgium

Applications are now being accepted for the ARES International Training Scholarships 2026–2027, available to candidates from 31 designated developing countries. Managed by the Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES) in Belgium, these prestigious scholarships aim to build professional capacity and support inclusive development by offering fully funded study programs in Belgian universities and higher education institutions. The application period runs from 4 August 2025 to 19 September 2025 at 12:00 PM (Belgian time, UTC+1).

These scholarships are intended for professionals who seek advanced training that benefits both their careers and the institutions they serve in their home countries. The programs combine high academic standards with real-world relevance, making them a springboard for future development leaders.

Index of Available Training Courses

Applicants can apply to one of the following programs offered for the 2026–2027 cycle:
Specialized Bachelor’s Degree: Offered in Business Data Analysis (one program available).
Specialized Master’s Programs: Ten in total, including: Human Rights, Risk & Disaster Management, Public Health Policy, International Development Economics, Microfinance, Social Innovation Design, and more.
Short-Term Continuing Education: Six programs ranging from 2 to 6 months in areas like Global Health, Transitional Justice, Digital Pedagogy, and Sustainable Development Tools.

Eligibility: Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be a citizen and current resident of one of the 31 ARES partner countries. Palestinian nationals may apply even if they reside outside the list.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) to qualify for the specialized bachelor’s program, or a master’s-level degree (300 ECTS) to apply for master’s or continuing education programs.
  • Candidates are required to demonstrate a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in one of the designated partner countries.
  • This scholarship is very selective and is designed for professionals working in fields such as education, public health, environmental management, engineering, and related areas.

What the Scholarship Covers

The ARES scholarship provides comprehensive support, which includes the following benefits:
For Bachelor’s and Master’s Programs:

  • International round-trip airfare
  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly living allowance for up to 12 months
  • Coverage for visa-related expenses
  • Health insurance throughout the program
    For Continuing Education Courses:
  • Return travel and living stipend
  • Insurance
  • Additional costs for indirect mission support upon arrival

Application Process

Applications must be filled out and submitted exclusively through the GIRAF online system. Submissions via email are not accepted, and applicants should avoid sharing personal data by email to prevent phishing.
Steps to Apply:

  1. Create or log in to your GIRAF account (must be validated by ARES).
  2. Access the application via “My Tasks” > “Competitive Calls” > “Application for International Training 2026–2027.”
  3. Complete the application form (can be saved and edited multiple times).
  4. Finalize and submit your application before the deadline. After submission, edits are no longer allowed.

ARES scholarships are open to citizens from the following countries:
Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe
South America & Caribbean: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru
Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam
Special Case: Palestinian Territory (eligible regardless of current residence)

Duration and Timeline

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s programs: Maximum of 12 months
  • Continuing training courses: Between 2 to 6 months
    These programs are offered in French or English depending on the institution and discipline.

Legal Appeal and Fair Access

If an application is denied, candidates may file an appeal with the Belgian Council of State within 60 days of receiving the decision notice.
Appeals must follow formal procedures and include substantiated reasons such as procedural flaws or misuse of power. For emergencies, suspension appeals may also be filed.
